St. Brigid’s Story Print E-mail
TSLC has chosen the life of St. Brigid to represent the spirit of Sanctuary. Her open heart and deep love for mankind continually inspires us to warmly embrace our elders and welcome all with abundant hospitality.

St. Brigid (ca. 453 – ca. 523) was born to a pagan Irish king and a Christian Pictish slave near Dundalk in County Louth. Brigid grew up tenderhearted and with an undying belief in the potential of every man. As a child, she was so moved by a sermon by St. Patrick that she began giving away her possessions to those in need. Upon reaching womanhood, Brigid took the veil as a nun and helped form “Church of the Oaks,” Ireland’s first Christian religious community of women.

Brigid devoted the rest of her life to establishing religious communities across Ireland, converting souls and tending to the sick and hungry. Known as the protector of all and the healer of body and spirit, Brigid welcomed strangers to her fireside and provided refuge and sanctuary for all.
